Forget the keto diet or intermittent fasting, there’s a new fad in the city these days and it’s called the ‘dopamine fast’. As the name implies, it means going without any form of pleasure (dopamine is the chemical that gives us the feeling of pleasure) for up to 24 hours in order to reset the brain’s ‘reward system’. In order to stem the effects of the neurotransmitter, people attempting this dopamine fast are abstaining from food, sex, exercise, social activities, technology or any kind of stimulation at all. The process is probably being blown out of proportion by the internet in general, but some people are convinced. Dr. Emiliano Merlo from the School of Psychology at the University of Sussex says; ‘I do not know any piece of scientific literature that will give empirical support for the explanation that the participants are giving for dopamine fasting’.
