It occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the myelin sheath, the protective covering of nerve fibers, leading to inflammation and damage. This disrupts the normal transmission of nerve signals, resulting in a range of symptoms such as fatigue, numbness, muscle weakness, vision problems, and coordination issues. The exact cause of MS is unknown, but it is believed to involve genetic, environmental, and possibly infectious factors. While there is no cure for MS, various treatments can help manage symptoms, reduce relapses, and slow disease progression.
