The ancient Greeks saw mechanical machines as an opportunity to replace human labour - and also believed that Hephaestus, the god of blacksmithing, used mechanical helpers. Leonardo Da Vinci also developed a mechanical automaton. His drawings of a knight's armour with complicated cable pull systems inside have survived to this day: it was intended to give the impression that a ghost was controlling the armour.
