A mouth ulcer (aphtha) is an ulcer that develops on the oral cavity's mucous membrane. Mouth ulcers are widespread, developing in connection with a variety of disorders and by a variety of processes, but there is typically no major underlying cause. A mouth ulcer that does not heal can be an indication of oral cancer in rare cases. Individual ulcers may occur, or numerous ulcers may appear at the same time (i.e., a "crop" of ulcers). An ulcer can be kept alive by inflammation and/or subsequent infection once it has established.
