Technology Update: Surgical Microscope to See Cancer Cells in Real-Time

Sailender01 Nov, 2019Health

As internal cancerous tumors resemble healthy tissues, frozen section analysis is used during and after surgeries to confirm if the entire human is removed. This is a slow process that often requires regular follow-up procedures. Researchers developed a hyperspectral surgical microscope which enables to spot cancer cells in real-time during surgeries. It not only images across the optical spectrum (from UV to infrared), but also uses machine learning techniques to analyze the produced images and identify tell-tale signs of cancer.
