Artificial grass can be made of nylon, polyethylene, or polypropylene that is threaded into a rubber backing to replicate real grass. Under the backing is a gravel compacted drainage layer, which is secured along the edge. A sand mixture is also added to weigh down the turf and protect the backing. High quality artificial turf looks quite real, and may have a thatch layer to mimic natural grass and create a more realistic look.
