Wantagh is a hamlet located in the Town of Hempstead, located in Nassau County on Long Island. The hamlet is home to many Historical Markers from the New York State, including Captain John Seaman and Col. John Jackson. Capt. John Seaman used to own an estate in Wantagh named Cherrywood. The site has been turned into the Cherrywood shopping center at the corner of Jerusalem and Wantagh avenues. Jones Beach also used to be owned by Major Thomas Jones. Tourism in Wantagh is centered on Jones Beach and has also influenced the current motto of Wantagh, "The Gateway to Jones Beach."
