In 1926, the Alabama Crimson Tide Football Quarterback, Benjamin Russell Jr., invented the first original sweatshirt. Someone who used to wear, and eventually got tired of the old itchy, and chaffy woollen jersey. He set out to design something that was a lot more comfortable than his old jersey. In 1920, he joined forces with his father who owned a manufacturing company to create something that would cause no itch or chaff. They chose cotton from women?s undergarments into something that has become iconic. The name ?sweatshirt? was derived from their origin when they?re out on the field making their play and sweating it out. Today, sweatshirts are used for the same purpose they were made, but also to keep wearers warm. Over the years, sweatshirts have changed in style but have also stayed true to the original sweatshirt ever made. Today it is an athletic wear but also a stylish fashion piece that?s versatile.
