At 5,200 feet above sea level, nestled at the centre of Kashmir Valley, the scenic city of Srinagar houses 1.3 million people over an area of nearly 300 sq.km. Jammu and Kashmirs capital city is situated on the banks of River Jhelum and is endowed with lakes, forests and mountains. Srinagars formation dates back to the 3rd century BC. Its rich natural and cultural heritage makes it an important tourism landmark, which serves as a major source of income for the city. Srinagar is also a centre of trade. Local artisans specialize in woodwork, weaving and handicraft. Lots of industrial units within the city manufacture carpets, shawls and silk for export. Due to the ample presence of pine and deciduous trees, multiple industries manufacture wood products (including but not limited to furniture). These industries also process resin for use in the chemical industry.
