According to a recent case report, a 37-year-old female patient died following seizures and cardiac arrest after toxic ingestion of benzonatate- a commonly prescribed nonnarcotic antitussive agent. The case was reported in the journal American Journal of Case Reports. Benzonatate is one of the most widely prescribed nonnarcotic antitussives to relieve cough symptoms. Due to its structural similarity with other local anesthetics, such as tetracaine and procaine, the risk to the public is not fully appreciated.
