A scramjet engine, short for supersonic combustion ramjet engine, is a type of air-breathing jet engine that operates at hypersonic speeds, typically above mach 5 (five times the speed of sound) or higher. A scramjet engine relies on the principle of ramjet propulsion, which uses the forward motion of the vehicle to compress incoming air and achieve combustion without the need for any rotating components, such as compressors or turbines, as in traditional jet engines.
