Rising stem gate valves have threads on the outside of the valve body. The gate stem moves up when the valve opens. Rising stem valves are usually made of cast or forged steel, while non-rising stem valves are more commonly brass, bronze or cast iron. This way you can visually track how open the valve is. For a rising stem gate valve, it is easy to tell whether the valve is open or closed by looking at the exposure of the valve stem.
