Ring and pinion gears are used to transmit torque and rotate machinery in a variety of applications. They are the primary mechanism by which rotating machinery, such as pumps, fans and motors, function. Gears come in many types, with the most common being the simple pin and cog. Most gears use a series of teeth and a pair of pin-like projections to transmit torque, but some gears use a rotary motion instead of a linear motion to transmit torque.
