Brought into being in the year of 1912 after the assassination of its namesake William Marsh Rice, Rice University has now established itself as a prominent Research University with a distinctive undergraduate focus. Its distinct emphasis on education is confirmed by a relatively small student student-faculty ratio. This ratio is the lowest in the top American universities including the Ivy League.
