Paddy is essentially rough or unhusked rice that was introduced to the primarily rural state of Punjab in the early years of the green revolution. It was an exercise aimed as a substitution of the American wheat import, and food deficit reduction. With a geographical area of 5.03 million hectare, about 83% of it is under agricultural cultivation. The state contributes over 45% of wheat, and nearly 30% rice to the central pool of the country's public distribution system.
