The rectovaginal fistula is described in medical terms as an abnormal epithelial line between the rectum and vagina. One of the main causes of the rectovaginal fistula is childbirth. Prolonged labor with necrosis of the part or an obstetric injury with a third or fourth-degree perineal tear could result in the rectovaginal fistula. Infection, breakdown of the repair, or any injury near that region also could result in the rectovaginal fistula.
