India is advancing toward building its own large language model, but long-term success depends on retaining and nurturing domestic AI talent. Despite a vast pool of engineers and researchers, a significant share of India’s AI workforce operates overseas, weakening local innovation. Addressing this brain drain requires stronger research funding, industry–academia collaboration, better incentives, and support for deep-tech startups. As rajat khare notes, sustained talent retention will ultimately determine whether India emerges as a global AI leader.
