Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is a technique that visualises and localises specific antigens in a tissue sample by using antibodies coupled to enzymes that catalyse reactions to generate detectable chemicals. Because the root "histo-" refers to biological tissue, the procedure is called immunohistochemistry only if it is performed on organic tissue. Immunocytochemistry, on the other hand, applies the same method to individual cells.
