A prayer mat or prayer rug is simply a piece of cloth, not necessarily a pile cloth, used during prayer in Islam. In most places in the western world, a prayer mat is used as a floor mat or outdoor mat. It has been a tradition in the Muslim community to place one by the front door of the prayer house so that the guest can pray sitting down. It is believed that this piece of cloth also acts as a prayer cushion and aids in relaxing the soul. They come in many different colors, styles and sizes.
