The Italian wine appellations first came into place as a useful tool to organize the various types of wines on the basis of where they come from and how they are produced. While the system originated in 1963, the presently used ?Law 164? was developed after much discussion and vinological research in 1992. The law aims to increase the number of classified Italian wines through strict checks on various aspects of the wine-making process. The true purpose for bringing forth the appellations is to further improve and increase the quality of Italy?s wines.
