Polymerization initiators are any chemical species that reacts with a monomer to produce an intermediate compound that can link with a large number of other monomers to form a polymeric compound. Initiators are used in radical polymerization to control heat or light initiation. The type of initiator to use in free-radical polymerization is determined by two factors: solubility and decomposition temperature. The initiator should be soluble in the solvent, and its decomposition temperature must be below or equal to the boiling point of the solvent used for polymerization.
