Wire-sawing block-cast silicon ingots into thin slices produces polycrystalline silicon wafers. They have a light p-type doping, resulting in a cluster of small, spherical cells. The front surface is doped with n-type dopants, which produce a p-n junction just beneath the surface. To make crystalline silicon suitable for solar cells, it is annealed at high temperatures.
