If a person holds a green card as a result of marriage and the pair had been wed for less than two years when the green card was awarded, the status is conditional rather than permanent. The right to conditional residence ends two years after it was granted. Because the applicant must demonstrate that the marriage was not entered into only to acquire an immigration benefit, this status is conditional.
