Peripheral vascular disease (PVD), also known as peripheral artery disease (PAD), is a circulatory condition that affects the blood vessels outside of the heart and brain. This condition occurs when the arteries that supply blood to the limbs, especially the legs, become narrowed or blocked due to the buildup of fatty deposits called plaque. Peripheral vascular disease is most commonly caused by atherosclerosis, which is the hardening and narrowing of the arteries due to a combination of factors such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, and diabetes.
