In the early stages of gum disease, the gums bleed on brushing and may appear puffy and swollen. Most treatment involves a special cleaning process called scaling and root planning, which removes plaque and tartar/calculus around the tooth and smoothen the root surfaces of the teeth. Early gum disease is called gingivitis. Scaling and root planning with proper daily cleaning will achieve a good result. Advanced cases are called Periodontists, which is generally more severe than gingivitis, may require more complex treatment over a period of time requiring several visits.
