An illness that affects the lining of the digestive tract is called a peptic ulcer. The lining of your gastrointestinal tract is meant to protect you, but when you have a peptic ulcer, this layer fails and the stomach lining is damaged. Peptic ulcers can be of several different types, including jejunal, esophageal, duodenal, and stomach ulcers. The formation of a sore in the duodenum's lining is known as a duodenal ulcer. When a sore develops in the stomach lining, it becomes a stomach ulcer. Esophageal ulcers occur when there is an excessive amount of pepsin and acid reflux.
