Clinical trials are a fundamental requirement for evaluating the safety and efficacy of novel therapeutic interventions. Owing to the involvement of several different stakeholders and given the inherent complexity of the process, these trials are prone to delays, and only 10% of the pharmacological leads that are evaluated, eventually enter the market. Clinical research is also capital intensive; it is estimated that, in the US alone, 40% of the pharma R&D budget is spent on conducting clinical trials.
