Bacterial infections of the lungs and blood are a common cause of illness and death worldwide. The two most common types of bacterial infections of the lungs are pneumonia and tuberculosis (TB). Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. It can range in severity from mild to life-threatening. Symptoms can include fever, coughing, chest pain, and difficulty breathing.
