Why are radiographs called X-rays? The photograph electrified the general public and aroused great scientific interest in the new form of radiation. R?ntgen called it "X" to indicate it was an unknown type of radiation. The name stuck, although (over R?ntgen's objections), many of his colleagues suggested calling them R?ntgen rays. X-rays and CT scans both use a small dose of ionizing radiation to produce images. An MRI scan, however, doesn't work this way. It uses powerful magnets and radio waves to create the images instead of ionizing radiation. So, you are not exposed to radiation when you have an MRI scan, unlike a CT scan or x-ray.
