NFPA 1994 also establishes performance requirements for protective ensembles of first responders who may be exposed to hazardous materials (hazmat) and chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) agents. It has different levels of protective gear for different types of exposure risks, providing adequate protection without sacrificing the ability to move and function. That being said, the standard calls for strict testing of chemical resistance, durability and compatibility with respiratory protection. Compliance with NFPA 1994 provides emergency personnel with additional protection by reducing contamination and improving response to hazardous environments, including potential terrorism events.
