When a child engages in thumb sucking, the pressure of the thumb (or other finger) resting against the gums can interfere with the natural jaw growth and tooth eruption. This can cause crooked teeth and bite problems, such as an open bite which is an orthodontic problem. Overuse of pacifiers after complete growth of teeth can lead to tooth decay, crooked teeth, problems with bite and jaw alignment. Thumb sucking and pacifiers affect the growth of the jaws negatively. Dentists, can, however, correct the issues with expanders.
