One kind of random packing material that’s mostly employed in mass transfer operations is metal pallet rings. Compared to the first generation of packing materials, the traditional Raschig rings, these rings constitute an improvement. A sequence of windows that are punched out of the ring walls create tongues that are bent inward toward the center of the ring in the design of Metal Pall Rings. With this design change, the ring’s surface area and void space are greatly increased, which improves liquid distribution and reduces pressure drop over the packing bed.
