LUMPECTOMY VS. MASTECTOMY: WHICH IS BETTER FOR BREAST CANCER?

University Cancer Centers30 Oct, 2021Health

People with breast cancer can choose between total removal of a breast (mastectomy) or breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy) followed by radiation in specific conditions. For people with only one side of cancer in the breast and a tumor less than four centimeters, a lumpectomy followed by radiotherapy is likely to be as beneficial as mastectomy. It is also necessary to have clear margins (no cancer cells in the tissue surrounding the tumor).
