In traditional spine surgery, large incisions in the back are made to separate muscle tissues. Thus the spine surgeon can thoroughly diagnose and treat the problem. However, laser spine surgery requires a minor incision of around an inch to two inches. The surgeon can next use lasers to remove the source of nerve sensitivity and pain from the incision. This is achieved by reflecting nerve terminals and shrinking the intervertebral discs. This therapy, technically known as radiofrequency, can relieve the patient's pain. Laser spine surgery may occasionally necessitate a laminotomy. A laminotomy entails decompressing the disc by removing some of its tissue/contents. Pressure on the spine and adjacent structures is reduced. Notably, in this case, the lasers are used to burn rather than cut the contents on the disc.
