Keeping The Faith Popular Bingo

With the closure of Stakes Golden Torch Club in 1973, Popular Bingo became the natural center & spiritual home of Northern Soul. What it lacked in club-kudos it more than compensated for with sheer capacity; at its height the club could play host to 2000 people with two operative dance-floors. Its nearest rival was Blackpoll Mecca, but this club only opened in normal hours & did not host all-nighters as did the others. Besides all this space, the venue had excellent acoustics to match; a veritable theatre du dense. With its ornate, side-positioned balconies & domed-ceiling, this enormous palace of faded elegance invited a culture where the dancing came to be as important as the music. This music of course being comprised of obscure, rare & powerful tunes from the sub-mainstream soul-music scenes of Chicago & Detroit. It had to be loud, upbeat & fast.
