Is UGC-NET Mandatory for a PhD Program?

In India, clearing the NET is usually a prerequisite for many full-time PhD courses. Universities and research centers ask candidates to have cleared the NET (either JRF or Assistant Professor eligibility) to be eligible to apply for a PhD course. The rationale for this is that clearing NET indicates that the candidate has a certain academic competence in the subject of study, which is necessary for carrying out quality research.
