Is There A Vaccine For IBD?

Recent research published in the journal Nature Communications revealed that a vaccine modifying the composition and function of the gut microbiota offered protection against the onset of chronic IBDs and certain metabolic disorders (diabetes and obesity). IBDs- Crohn's Disease and ulcerative colitis are linked to abnormalities of the gut microbiota. Patients generally present reduced bacterial diversity in their intestinal flora along with excessive levels of bacteria that express a protein called flagellin. The protein flagellin enables them to penetrate the layer of mucus that covers the intestinal wall (bacteria-resistant wall) and which is usually sterile.
