While it is theoretically possible for an anal fistula to heal on its own, this usually does not happen. Most fistulas in this area start in the anal glands, which become infected. Even if the fistula begins to heal, the chances of an abscess and infection recurring are very high. Fistula tracts must be treated because they do not heal on their own. If left untreated for a long time, there is a risk of cancer developing in the fistula tract.
