Hippies came to be known in the early 1960s as a group of youngsters who felt alienated from the materialistic world, in simpler terms they were disconnected from the ideas of development and industrialization. As people who didn't feel like they "fit into" the conventional norms of society, it is only natural that a separate rebellious group would emerge, thus forming a counter-culture. Their views on life were detached from attachment, a life always on the road with no attachment to a single place other than earth as a whole. They take mother earth very seriously, talk about the world is my home! these guys believe that.
