The African wild dog is the largest member of the canid family, with males weighing up to 100 pounds and females weighing up to 75 pounds. They are the only member of the family that has retained a hunting behavior, and they use their acute hearing and sense of smell to find and chase down prey. They are also the only canid that uses its paws to dig for food and water, a trait that was once thought to be unique to foxes. The African wild dog is primarily nocturnal, but they will also hunt during the day.
