An inguinal hernia is a bulge or protrusion in the groin or scrotum that can be seen or felt. Males are more likely than females to develop inguinal hernias. The inguinal canal is a passageway located near the groin in the abdominal wall. Men are up to ten times more likely than women to develop inguinal hernias. Premature infants are at an increased risk of developing an inguinal hernia. For instance, approximately one-third of male infants born before 33 weeks gestation will have an inguinal hernia.
