Adult-onset immunodeficiency disorders are conditions where the immune system becomes compromised later in life. They are caused by factors that impair immune function, including certain medications like steroids and immunosuppressants. Other causes are chronic infections such as HIV, cancers (particularly blood cancers), and severe, long-term illnesses. Autoimmune diseases, malnutrition, and specific immune disorders, like anti-IFN-γ autoantibody syndrome, can also lead to acquired immunodeficiency. Unlike congenital forms, these disorders develop after birth due to external or disease-related factors. This results in a heightened susceptibility to frequent, severe, or unusual infections.
