Sleep apnea is a sleep condition characterized by pauses in breathing or shallow, uneven breathing while sleeping. These pauses can occur many times every hour and last anything from a few seconds to several minutes. In the event that breathing stops or becomes shallow, blood oxygen levels may drop. Because of this, the brain regularly wakes up during sleep to either resume breathing or prevent the oxygen levels from decreasing.
