Hypertension or high blood pressure is a common condition wherein the force of the blood flowing through the arteries is high enough to cause deleterious effects on the heart. The detrimental effect of high BP on the heart develops over years. Recent studies have shown that about of 33% urban and of 25% rural Indians are hypertensive. Of all hypertensive patients, only 25-40% are aware that they have high BP.
