The Solar Car Project was founded in 2008 by students at Stanford University. Their goal is to develop a solar car that can travel across the United States without any fossil fuels. In 2010, they developed the first prototype of their solar car, called Sunraycer. The Sunraycer is a three-wheeled vehicle that runs on solar power. It is capable of traveling up to 55 miles per hour (89 km/h) and has a maximum range of 300 miles (480 km). The Sunraycer weighs about 4,000 pounds (1,814 kg) and is made out of carbon fiber composite materials. The team plans to build a second version of their solar car, which will have four wheels instead of three. The team hopes to begin construction of the second model in 2019.
