How to Test Starter Motor in Car

Changli03 Nov, 2023Other

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery To prevent electrical shocks or accidents, disconnect the car battery. Remove the negative (black) cable from the battery terminal and secure it to a safe location where it won't accidentally make contact with the terminal. Step 2: Test the Battery Voltage With your multimeter set to DC voltage, reconnect the negative battery cable and touch the positive (red) probe to the positive battery terminal and the negative (black) probe to the negative terminal. A fully charged battery should read around 12.6 volts. If the voltage is significantly lower, your battery may be the problem. Step 3: Voltage at the Starter Motor Have your assistant turn the ignition key to the "Start" position while you measure the voltage at the starter motor's terminal. Connect the positive probe to the starter terminal and the negative probe to a clean and unpainted part of the engine block.
