We recommend preparing kava with hot water from your faucet because this is usually the right temperature (around 120 degrees) and gets the most active ingredients, called kavalactones, out of the root. People disagree about whether boiling water makes it easier to get the lactones out of the kava or kills their effectiveness. If you boil the water, the kava tea you make will taste bitterer. And water that is over 140 degrees can make the kava solidify, which makes it harder to strain.
