A cataract is a cloudy area that forms on the eye's clear lens due to changes in water content, pigment buildup, and altered lens cells, typically as part of aging but also possible in younger individuals. While cataracts initially develop gradually, surgery becomes necessary to restore vision, boasting a 95% success rate. For those with cataracts in both eyes, surgery is performed on one eye at a time, often with a one-month gap to ensure vision stability and monitor healing. Recovery from cataract surgery takes up to 8 weeks, though discomfort subsides within a few days. Post-surgery care includes using protective shields, avoiding strenuous activities, and applying prescribed eye drops to prevent infections. Patients may also need a new glasses prescription after their vision stabilizes.
