The standard Boeing 707 aircraftone of the most popular planes at the timewere flying in a configuration with two seats on one side of the aisle and three on the other. Trippe tightened that to a three-by-three layout to help lower costs. Still, customers had plenty of legroom. On one of Pan Ams first aircraft, the DC-6B plane, Rainbow class fliers had a roomy 38 inches of pitch, according to cabin plans from the Pan Am Historical Foundation.
