Kona coffee thrives in beautiful plantations on the hills below the most renowned volcanoes in Hawaii. White flowers, called 'Kona snow,' start to flourish at the trees all over the island in February and March. Small green fruits develop by April. By August, they become red fruit for harvest, known as a "cherry." Each tree generates 10-15 pounds of coffee cherries a year, which eventually turns into around two pounds of dry coffee beans. Once the cherries have been harvested, they are dried, processed, and converted into Kona coffee beans. It takes roughly 10 lbs. of cherries to produce approximately 1-2 lbs. of finished best Kona coffee.
